Turtlenecks: you either hate them, or you love them. Honestly, I used to cringe at the sight of them! If you would have told me five years ago that I would have turtleneck shirts in my wardrobe I would have rolled over laughing. Turtlenecks can be very intimidating to wear if you do not know how to style them properly. Many people often overlook the style and assume it is going to look "awkward" on them. It was not until about two years ago that I took the leap of adding turtlenecks into my fall clothing attire. Since then, I have never looked back! Half of my fall/winter clothing is made up entirely of turtlenecks now! If you are interested in where I purchase my turtlenecks and how I style them, then keep on reading!

Any outfit you can wear with leggings is an outfit for me! I am always attracted to white and black anything, so when I saw the shirt in the store, I knew I needed it in my wardrobe. The relaxed and chunky neckline is very comfortable, especially if you are trying out turtlenecks for the first time. The looser fit and longer length of the turtleneck allows for it to be dressed down, too. I chose to dress up this outfit with statement earrings and tall riding boots, but it could easily be worn with jeans or athleisure.

A denim jacket is a timeless staple that everyone should have in their wardrobe. Over the past several decades it has always stayed in style. I find myself using a denim jacket to help throw together an outfit that looks like I put a lot of time into planning it, when really, I didn't. Pairing my dressy black turtleneck with the denim jacket allowed for my top to be worn casually. Also, the collar helps decrease the spacing between the ears and neck, which can sometimes feel awkward when wearing a turtleneck.

When I first began using turtlenecks in my wardrobe, I chose to use a cardigan vest to ease my way into the style. Since most turtlenecks are slim fit, I felt pretty bare when wearing one alone. The vest helped to camouflage my mid/back section and dress up my outfit too. I added in a pair of statement earrings to decrease the spacing between my neck and ears, jeans, and tall riding boots.

If you are brave enough to try wearing your turtleneck alone, then go for it. However, if you are not there yet, try adding a blanket scarf to your outfit to take away the focus from your midsection. I prefer to drape the scarf down both sides of my neck with a turtleneck so that my neck can breathe and get some air. That's mostly because Texas' weather is always jumpy and you never know how long it is going to stay cold for. Recently, I have been into adding a pop of color into my outfits and I love the autumn vibes I get from the orange turtleneck and my leopard shoes.

Wearing an open sweater with a turtleneck has been my new style this fall and I love it! At first, I was not sure how well it looked, but once I found the right combo I was obsessed. I have tried this style with a solid colored top and sweater and it does not satisfy me as much. However, the subtle striped pattern of the turtleneck works well with the black sweater. Usually when I find turtlenecks, they are either completely slim fit, or have a loose neck and body. What I love about this top is that the body is slim, and the neck is loose and chunky! You get the best of both worlds! And did I mention that the sleeves only go to the elbows? Now you don't have to pretend that you are not really sweating underneath all of the layers! However, I would recommend only wearing this pairing when it is really cold. The combo will definitely keep you warm when you need to be.

Last, but not least, a top knot to finish off the look. I love the look of a top knot bun, especially if that means I do not have to do my hair. My favorite quality about the top knot is that it always slims down the face. That's what we all want, right? Pulling the hair away from the face and adding a pair of statement earrings looks beautiful when wearing a turtleneck top. I like the way this top is loose, which adds a causal feel to the turtleneck. The earrings help dress up the look and diminish the spacing between the ears and neck.
